Getting to know IM Larry Kaufman

I don't know anything yet about this member of the Baltimore Kingfishers, but I'll be spending the match trying to see what makes this man the player he is.

According to his USCL Bio, he was born in 1947, and this is his third year as a member of the Baltimore Kingfishers. He's black against IM Irina Krush, the 2007 US Women's Champion. This will be a great match to watch.

IM Kaufman's son Ray Kaufman is an NM himself and an alternate for the Baltimore Kingfishers.

A chessgames.com comment:

ughaibu: Larry Kaufman has been the top rated gaijin shogi player for more than twenty years.

What's gaijin shogi? Well shogi is Japanese chess, and I as far as I can gather from googling, gaijin is a foreigner. Came across an interesting read about 'foreigners' in Japan - will have to read more later.

An interview: http://www.msoworld.com/chat/kaufpost.html

IM Kaufman is the author of The Chess Advantage in Black and White.

He's a member of the Rybka team member, the most feared chess program out there right now.

IM Kaufman's game against IM Krush is going awfully fast. Time Control of 90/30 - he's at 1:27 after 11 moves. Krush is at 1:16. Queens have been off the board for several moves now.
It's Black's 12th move and he's down to 1:13 and still yet to move. Makes a change from his quick moving.

For those interested in the Maryland area, here's a list of teachers that include IM Kaufman: http://www.serve.com/mdchess/chess_teachers.html
